Challenge

Six Flags maintenance workers were faced with transforming a corroding pool into a safe, repaired, and attractive dolphin tank. Due to the rusted re-bar and the deteriorating concrete, restoring the tank seemed an impossible feat. Because concrete will not bond to itself again during repair, it meant that the concrete would have to be replaced entirely as well as removing and replacing the re-bar. Additionally, the tank needed to be covered with a protective coating that would adhere to concrete and was NSF/ANSI 61 certified.

Solution

Novocoat products were easily able to fix the tank issue without complete concrete and re-bar removal and replacement. First, the concrete substrate was grit blasted, causing all failed concrete to break loose. The re-bar was treated with Novocoat’s RUSTSTOPPER to stop further rust. The concrete was then repaired with NOVOLITE and T-FLOOR which bonds tenaciously to the concrete creating a lasting and permanent bond.

Because the concrete repairs were done with a novolac epoxy, the material was cured completely the same day, as opposed to the 28 day cure time concrete requires. Last, the entire dolphin pool was top coated with SP2000 tinted blue. SP2000 resists the corrosive salt water within the dolphin tank and it is NSF/ANSI 61 certified.

Six Flags was impressed with not only the ability to successfully repair and beautifully coat the tank, but the efficient and expedited down time from start to finish.
